Social Media’s Influence on People's Interests and Preferences

I once asked a friend what kind of bag she preferred, and she said she wanted one that looked exactly like the ones her favorite TikTok influencer carries. When I asked why, she simply said she adores the influencer and wants to look just like her.

Social media now has a great impact on people's interests and preferences. Just like my friend, many people no longer think for themselves; they see social media as the ultimate reality, one they must be a part of.

One of the biggest ways social media shapes people’s interests is through social media influencers. These influencers promote brands by creating content and establishing themselves as experts to a large audience. Today, having a massive social media following is almost a requirement for making an impact.

The brands they promote become a part of their identity. A person who admires these influencers would naturally want to use the same products. Many people rely on influencers for their skincare choices and other trends just to feel included.”

One notable example is the rise of the 'Rich Aunty & Baddie' aesthetic. TikTok influencers like Papaya Ex and Nicki Dabarbie promote a high-maintenance, luxury lifestyle one that many ladies aspire to.They didn't fail to showcase designer outfits, extravagant wigs and dramatic make up further influencing young women to adopt the "baddie"look that includes them purchasing tight dresses, corsets, lace wigs, and heavy accessories.

Many ladies now prioritize looking like social media influencers, driving up demand for waist trainers, bodycon dresses, and designer dupes.

This kind of influence often has a negative effect on people because it spreads false information, makes them buy things on impulse, and takes away their uniqueness. But despite these downsides, brands gain a lot from it. All they need to do is hire a popular influencer to promote their product, and suddenly, they get a flood of orders.
